Sabah Fest 2018 : "Solungkoi" (A Tale of Jambatan Tamparuli)

Sabah : The Land Below The Wind

It is May again and it's a month of Harvest Festival Celebration!

Sabah Fest organised by local Sabah Tourism Board and relevant parties caught a lot of attention yearly since the first event held many years ago.

This year is related to "Jambatan Tamparuli", that's made me interested to attend the event. I was brought up with the song "Jambatan Tamparuli", my dad is a native and love to listen to music and karaoke, while my mom having an entertainment business during my childhood. Local songs were played while we were at my mom shop back then. In the other hand, I was the co-host for Foodie Blogger by NTV 7 and once of the scene was shot at Tamparuli too!

I love culture and I always do, maybe it's because I'm having the native bloods runs in me. Yes, I am Sino. :)

The above video is the Jambatan Tamparuli song played. If you would like to have the lyrics and the real music, do drop me and email at meitzeu@meitzeu.com! I will send you the link and lyric.

The following are some of the scenes that I have shared here and such I have experienced that night.

What is "Solungkoi"? You may ask.

It's a name of a young lady who were in love with a foreigner way back during those days when Sabah was under the British Colony. The performance and story line was okay, more to the love story of both.

The story was based on true story from such I have being understood. The name was crafted by the foreigner under the bridge after "Solungkoi" was being sacrificed and can be seen today. As for the foreigner, no one knows where he went since his lover was sacrificed.

Interesting, yet beautiful performance by the local artist this year. Looking forward for next year Sabah Fest. :)

Tamparuli : Homemade Noodle by Wun Chiap Restaurant 【

When they mentioned Tamparuli, it reminds me of the song "Jambatan Tamparuli".

That "Pak Pak Kang Ku Do. SuMuSui Do Jambatan.

Jambatan Do Tamparuli. Ba Kasut Tinggi O Ku." :)

After 45 minutes of on the road journey, we arrived at Tamparuli again! And its' noodle time again!

Spring Rolls and Meatball Soup -

Spring rolls and meatball soup. A hot bowl of soup along with their handmade fried egg noodles, do make a good combination.

Fried Eggs with Roasted Meat and Fried Egg Noodles -

Breakfast that we had during public holidays most of the time, even the owner know my dad. My dad love to go bring us to Tamparuli, just for the plate of fried egg noodle. And that's the specialty of Wun Chiap Restaurant.

The Yong Taufu, Yong Egg and Tamparuli Fried Noodle -

The "Yong" dishes. Originated from the Hakkas. Just to let you know, the egg rolls covering the minced meat only serves on public holidays and weekends. It is because the family members who studies/ works in KK are back to Tamparuli to lend a hand. :)

The Special Dishes by Wun Chiap -

I still remember the day during the video shoot for "Foodie Blogger"(NTV7), part of the dishes served by the owner and not in the menu though. :) In fact, the owners were not that friendly but in the end, especially when there's #Ernest Chong, the Malaysian artist, the whole atmosphere become friendlier.

A group photo of Us -

Before we left for our next video shoot, we took a group photo with the owner and his family members. I am glad that #Foodie Blogger crews could have a taste of one of our well known local delicacies.

For our information, this generation of Wun Chiap Restaurant should be the last generation to run the business. Therefore, visiting to the restaurant should be one of our to do list before the end.

The Co-Host and Host of #Foodie Blogger -

A photo with #Ernest Chong at Wun Chiap Restaurant as remembrance. Experiencing to be the co-host for the first time in my life, especially on screen really opens my eye and getting to make new friends from another field personally.

《爱食客三》 Foodie Blogger 3 - I'm on NTV7 Show! #Sabah Episode with Ernest 张顺源

It was an honour that meitzeu.com has been invited to be one of the co-host for Foodie Blogger 3 爱食客 《三》 Sabah episode by NTV7. :)

It has been exciting and keep bearing in mind that "JUST DO IT!" But, it seems like I'm nervous in a way that I wonder what did I talk during the shooting. (haha :D)

Without bragging more, lets start with the first location!

From KK to Tamparuli town, it takes roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour and HELLO to the famous extension bridge of Tamparuli!

- The "first" meet -

The landmark of Tamparuli town  - Tamparuli extension bridge "Jambatan Tamparuli"

*The original one was destroyed in Year 1999 by the flood, it was replaced by stronger bridge which we are standing today.

The means of people walking by foot back and forth, in and out of Tamparuli. Tamparuli was packed on every Wednesday, whereby the "Tamu" (local weekly market) was held on that day on weekly basis.

The lower bridge was for the use of vehicles and when the bridge covered by over flowed river water/ flood, there's another bridge which is higher at the other end of Tamparuli will be used.

In fact, Tamparuli is a mandatory town to pass by before heading to a few destinations, especially Kundasang. :)

- Wun Chiap Restaurant

The first restaurant to start with. With Ernest 张顺源, the host of Foodie Blogger. Looks cute doesn't he?

- Scenes -

A short scene and dialogue to make the show interesting!

- Dishes by Wun Chiap Restaurant -

Some may say it's just an ordinary fried noodles, but you never know what's behind the story of this homemade egg noodles.

- Let's Eat -
So back in KK! And that's the Second place to introduce!

- The boss in action -

Mr. Ng certainly happy for showing his skill!

- Sang Nyuk Mian -

They say that if we never had this, it means that we never visited Sabah before -

Sang Nyuk Mian

I have introduced Sinsuran Sang Nyuk Mian, which I normally go. The pork meat slices just melted somehow.

The third place to introduce will be in the middle of KK city. :) I love KK city!

- At the fountain of KK -

Guess where?! The weather was hot that day but the outcome was good. :)

- Their Breakfast -

That's Ah Leong and Berry! Extremely friendly in person!

- The process -

We have the chance to capture bits of the process to make the famous buns! Smell of goodness after those were baked!

- The host and the crew behind the scene -

I do admire the team work and down to earth personality. Responsible and serious while having fun as well. :)

I have learned something from the shooting period. "The beauty of food."

- Introducing and Tasting -

It's time for "Hainese buns! Peh Leh, Kopi O Ji Jiang!" (Uncle, one cup of black coffee please!)

- The third generation of Keng Wan Heng Restaurant

Alex and Suki. One of the friendliest people in Gaya Street and very happy with what they are doing. Serving classic fresh buns every day! Appreciate the passion to keep the classics bun for us to enjoy the authentic KK since 1980's.

- With host and the crew behind the scene -

From left to right, Victor (Assistant Producer), Jayson (camera man), Berry (Assistant Producer), me (co-host), Ernest (the host) and Ah Leong (Producer/Director).

Thank you for giving meitzeu.con this special opportunity to be the co-host of Sabah episode. Thank you for being patience towards me during the shooting. :)

That's all for today! Stay tuned this September for Sabah episode! Gosh! I'm actually appearing on national TV screen! I wonder what did I say and how I look from the screen.

And just to say, remember to watch the whole Third season of Foodie Blogger, hunting the goodness of Malaysia!

Here's a bit of what we did!

Hehe  a short clip on "Foodies Blogger 爱食客"!

Authentic Sabah Delicacies by Mango Garden Restaurant, Rumah Terbalik, Tamparuli

Being invited together with THP for food tasting at Mango Garden Restaurant during one Saturday.

To refresh a bit of our memory, Mango Garden Restaurant is located at the same location as Rumah Terbalik (The first Upside Down House in SEA), so maybe a light meal after visiting Rumah Terbalik?

- The Outdoor -

Guests might opt for outdoor to have their meal.

- The Interior -

Lovely design for a family and friends gathering.

Quiet restaurant and food was wonderful if you love Malay/ local cuisine.

So here are some of the dishes that we had the other day. :) For the first time I had TUHAU! A local Kadazan delicacy, very tempting.

- Of What We Had -

Generous amount of serving to us. In fact, overall they served very nice meal and there are one or two local delicacies that I'm not really liked it. The way they prepared the brinjal was a bit unacceptable for my taste buds.

- Fried Inked Squids -

- TUHAU! -

Tuhau is a kind of marinated ginger and it acts like appetizer as well.

- Our dessert -

Banana served with dried coconut and brown sugar. Nice combination as they said, the banana might be "too young" to be eaten as it was a bit hard, but with the combination of brown sugar, it blends well.

- The Menu -

According to the owner of Mango Garden Restaurant, they are serving organic vegetables (moreover plant by them too) and even planted some of the spices as well.

- Little Garden -

So, we will be expecting to have organic vegetables when time goes by.

Definitely a good idea to beautiful and adding points to the Rumah Terbalik opened for public.

- The Entrance of Mango Garden Restaurant -

If there's friends asking me where to seek for local delicacies for a change, Mango Garden Restaurant would be the first choice! Comfortable dining in with nice food.

Fun in Sabah : Tamparuli - Rumah Terbalik (Upside Down House) in Borneo (First in SEA)!

**Trip with THP (Website/ Fanpage).

Hello~ :) Been MIA for the past few days with piles of work in the office and restless nights, moreover I'm down with flu! Maybe I should less updating my blog and get more rest. :D

So now... Do you ever visit Upside Down House before?

It has been a hot topic lately, whereby from February 2012 onward, we will be having our very own Malaysian version of "Upside Down House". Everyone has been talking and interested to go there for a visit. :)

Last week, before going to Gaya Street for tea and the remarkable event - Bonding with Gaya Street, we went to the outskirt area of Sabah and headed to Tamparuli to visit the Upside Down House. It is located beside the road while on the way to Mt. Kinabalu and it's such an easy house to be found!

- Upside Down House -

It is the FIRST Upside Down House in SOUTH EAST ASIA. For the time being, there's only 5 upside down house in the whole world, 3 located at Europe, 1 in Japan and 1 in Sabah, Borneo!

Scroll further for other photos shared here. ;)

- Ticket -

Ticket cost RM18.00 for Adult while RM10.00 for MYKad Holder. RM5.00 for Child and Free of Charge for Below 2 years old.

The operation time is from 8.00am to 8.00pm.

Upside down house looks interesting for most of us and once in a life time experience is a must have. FYI, we are not allowed to take photographs inside the house so that everyone are tempted to visit there personally. ;) Shh... I wanted to describe the interior design to you, but... I will keep it a secret and make you feel tempted. (lol)

- Upside Down House -

 - Welcome to Upside Down House -

- Items are well fixed upside down -

A short visit inside and we went to the souvenirs shop at the small hut across.

- Souvenirs -

Souvenirs for remembrance anyone?

- Cafe -

The bakery seems nice to me. :) We didn't sit down and have a drink there, however, we drove all the way to Tuaran to eat the saliva drooling Soto as brunch! Yummy!

- Upside Down House and CAR -

The Kancil hanged upside down. 0_0 Good way to attract more people to take photo with it.

- Upside Down .... ME! -

Now the car is back to usual and I'm upside down. :P

And final words..

From now on, besides the well known Tamparuli Bridge. ;) Here's ANOTHER INTERESTING PLACE TO VISIT AT TAMPARULI!!

Happy weekend all! ;)

Kg. Telibong, Batu 21, Jalan Telibong Tamparuli,, 89208 Tuaran Sabah.
