Latest in Sabah : Kota Kinabalu - The Language of Art #tanahairku by #Petronas #CrackoArtGroup #Sabah

Weeks ago, I was invited by Petronas to the launching of #tanahairku 3.0 which Sabah, Sarawak and Johor were selected to held this unique event! Interesting yet close to our Malaysian heart. I love art, culture and heritage.

- BAH -

A local language close to Sabahan. Ended with 'bah' almost every day conversation!

- The Opening of #tanahairku

The most 'sporting' Tourism Minister we have! Met him many times in local events.

Do you see the wall mural created by Cracko Art Group which on the right of the above photo and which located at Wisma Sabah on Jalan Haji Saman, the building next to Suria Sabah? That is one of the art work for #tanahairku 3.0. The story of Huminodun, the colour of Sabah flag et cetera. Every element applied represent the local lifestyle and heritage.

- Flash Mob of #tanahairku 3.0

With singing and dancing (traditional and new) by local artists, the event was such a happening one! Glad to be there to celebrate such a meaningful launching. The campaign held by Petronas was a subtle reminder to the younger generation about what makes Malaysia special.

- The short Flash Mob taken via phone

This is what I left, all soft copies were deleted. -_-

- The KK Bloggers -

Left to Right : Chloe, Beverly, Myself, Charlotte and Calista.

I guess most of you know us. Right? ;)

- With Datuk Masidi  与拿督 Masidi -

A very active and friendly person.

- Cracko Art Group -

The artists who collaborated with Petronas for #tanahairku 3.0 campaign. According to reliable sources, there were a total of 22 streets artists have been commissioned to paint 10 selected walls in Kota Kinabalu and Johor Bahru for #tanahairku 3.0 campaign.

- BAH at Wisma Intiutama -

The other wall mural can be spotted at Wisma Intiutama of Lorong Dewan. BAH! Blending in the element of local unique culture heritage, can you see and imagine? Simpoton (A native music instrument), Rafflesia, Kadazan culture and others.

- With the local artists

I think it was the first time to see them personally, friendly personal!

Fun in Sabah : Kota Kinabalu - "A Guide to K K Heritage Walk" Conquering the Past of North Borneo Era

"A Guide to KK Heritage Walk" by Grace Leong was a great souvenir that I have received and wonderful knowledge that I have gained from the tour within 2 hours.

My posts about my tour with KK Heritage Walk are done and below are all the posts and amazing heritages I visited during the tour.

(Click those titles that might be interesting to you, I've linked with all the posts I written!)

 K K Heritage Walk to :-

Where the ceremony of Proclamation of Malaysia was held and our one and only wooden clock in whole Malaysia since World War I.

Malaysia Monument and North Borneo War Memorial

To commemorate the Independence of Sabah and the joining of the Federation of Malaysia on 16th September, 1963 and to commemorate the 13 soldiers who lose their lives out of the 79 from North Borneo who enlisted in the British Forces during World War I.

Bond Street and Dunlop Street (Gaya Street), Sabah Tourism Building and Australian Place

The two blocks of shophouses built in the 1950's  which still remained the same; The Post Office/ Bank building before the World War and the Australian Liberation Forces used the site for their camp when they landed in 1945.

Sipping bottled coffee with old fashioned charcoal toasted bread and also the homemade "Anzac" biscuits in an antique surrounding.

Surely, it is one of the best tour that I have joined in town!! Informative and close to my heart.

Gained so much information of Kota Kinabalu and Borneo's history from the tour and I love it!

Now, when people ask me "What do I understand about Kota Kinabalu? and What can I do in Kota Kinabalu?" The answer will be all these!

Fun in Sabah : K K Heritage Walk - Afternoon Tea at Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam, Australian Place

Continued our KK Heritage Walk from

Reached our last heritage of the KK Heritage Walk - Australian Place and army patterned building was interesting as we can see.

By looking upward from the main entrance of the building, we still can see they still maintain the original words of Penchetak Chung Nam (Chung Nam Printing Co.) which was the building was a printing company during the days before. The new owner maintain the original words as a reminder to us and younger generation about our amazing history of Borneo.

We can see a plaque was laid on the side wall of the building's main entrance.

"This Plaque was laid to commemorate "Australia Place" Australian Liberation Forces Camp Site in 1945 & dedication of Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam on 12 Aug 2005"

- Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam (婆罗州 1945 博物咖啡馆) -

Here goes the army patterned building. It is the Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam which served various dishes that is special and might not easily find at other coffee shops in town. They are famous for the old fashioned charcoal toasted bread which is round in shape and also the homemade "Anzac" biscuits which have some touching story and morals behind.

Finally, a coffee shop for us to have a rest by having a cup of iced bottle coffee with bread and biscuits and complete our KK Heritage Walk tour (Afternoon tea is included in the tour package. However, the biscuits are excluded and we need purchase ourselves from the coffee shop). "Anzac" biscuits is a must try when we visit Museum Kopitiam.

One word to describe "Antique". I like the feel when sitting there sipping coffee like an old lady. :D

- The Menu -

I wanted to go there for food hunt previously, but I do not have "Kaki-s" (friends) wanted to come along with me and finally I have my chance to visit here. Hence, I heard that they served tasty rice at the coffee shop. I'm more to a afternoon tea person with breads and a hot drink, so... remember to tell me after you have tried their Curry Rice or others!

- Completed KK Heritage Walk with a bottle of Iced Coffee and Anzac Biscuit -

- Anzac Biscuits (安再克饼干)-

Anzac biscuits could only be found at Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam.

A short background of the biscuits :-

"This very old recipe started during ration times in World War 2. The word ANZAC is abbreviation of our brave soldiers (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps.).

This biscuits were named in their honour.

Baked by the mothers, wives and love ones, Every biscuits speaks Love, Gratitude and Encouragement to the Soldiers."

It taste marvelous and it's quite filling with oat, I heard that even tourists from Australian or New Zealand told our tour guide that the Anzac biscuits that selling here are taste much better than their home made back in their home.

- Charcoal Toasted Bread -

For the first time I had it and it taste nice with Kaya and Butter! And each of us only have one!

Will be planning to go for another bread session some time in the future.

Here's some of the photographs I took from the coffee shop about the past, during Australian and New Zealand Army were here.

The shop surrounded with photographs and antiques in every corner of the coffee shop.

- Borneo, 16th Century Dutch Map -

That is Sabah (formerly known as North Borneo)!!! When it wasn't been expanded like a hound's head figured and the map was hanging at the left side of the main entrance's wall (from inside).

- Visitor Book -

Normally, I like to leave my signature on those visitors book when I sees one during my visiting to good restaurant and tourists spots. But I didn't manage to sign on this one. :(

However, I got my last stamp here!

- Newspaper cutting -

Interviews and background of the Coffee Shop and opinions toward Borneo. Such a coffee shop that full of memories.

Me and elder sister's "A Guide to KK Heritage Walk" booklet with stamps collected!!

Finally completed and I'm filled myself with the history of Kota Kinabalu!

I'm feeling lucky that I have the time and opportunity to join the tour. It was a great experience and informative that for locals and tourists to understand more about our KK Heritages. Not only these for now, we could explore others too!

The tour ended with a LARGE SMILEs on our face and the person who won the treasure hunt can smile even larger than all of us! :D

Now I know what can I say when visitors ask me :

"What do you know/ understand about Kota Kinabalu?"

Fun in Sabah : K K Heritage Walk - Bond Street & Dunlop Street (Gaya Street), Sabah Tourism Building and Australia Place

Continued our KK Heritage Walk from Malaysia Monument and North Borneo War Memorial.

We walked to the first street in Kota Kinabalu - Bond Street and Dunlop Street, which been renamed to Gaya Street after our independence.

Standing at the other end of the Gaya Street (Formerly known as Dunlop Street). We listened the history of Bond Street and Dunlop Street explained by Grace Leong.

And after that, WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TREASURE HUNTING TIME!!

Translation : Weekly Street Fair at Gaya Street. Only on Sunday from 5.30am to 1.00pm.

Gaya Street will turn into a Street Fair whereby sellers will be selling different kind of things from foods, coffees, fishes, toys and more! Non the least souvenirs for tourists to bring back to there country. Is a must go place for tourists when they are in town during the weekend. And the whole city area will be crowded with locals and tourists.

- Gaya Street -

When we walked further, we shall see the two blocks of shophouses built in the 1950's  which still remained the same. And normally, my mom will go to few of the shops there to purchase her Chinese New Years goodies which supermarket does not sell.

- Jesselton Hotel -

Everyone of us participated the treasure hunting and we gathered together at the lobby of the Hotel after we found the TREASURE! The first person who found it must run quickly to the hotel which located the  forefront of Gaya Street (the other end) of Gaya Street and tour guide will be waiting for us there and the winner will got him/ herself a souvenir! (I got my second stamp here!)

- Lunch at Bella Italia -

A another hot topic in town! Read my post about my Cozy Dinner at Bella Italia!

Gaya Street is like a park-like area where a lot of old shops and hotels are there and the roadway are different than others.

Furthermore, Jesselton Hotel was the first post-war modern hotel located in Dunlop Street (Gaya Street) and luckily it's still there and well maintained by the owners. The hotel have an image of premier "boutique" hotel with a colonial environment. For guests who stays in the hotel, they will see staffs who wear colonial attires and there is a English Cab as a transportation which still working parked in front of the hotel!! Besides, famous person includes Pope Paul II and boxer Mohamed Ali was staying there before.

We walked further and our next place will be -

-  Sabah Tourism Building -

It is a Historical Building which was formerly The Post Office/ Bank building before the war and Sabah Tourism Board (STB) moved into the building on 10th November, 1990. Visitors who have queries about Kota Kinabalu and Sabah may drop by to STB to ask for assistance, the counter  personnel will assist you on all your queries.

I got my third stamp at Sabah Tourism Board!! And one more to go!

After we have completed visiting to STB, we went off and walked a few street to the next heritage.

- Kota Kinabalu Community Centre -

Located at Australian Place. We reached one of the old building built 1958 which used for many historical events and have been refurnished to a better one.

Saw the amazing wall with beautiful photograph above? (The gate was closed and I can't take a nice photograph with it.) It's "The Story of Kota Kinabalu" which formerly known as Jesselton. Saw the white building at the left? It's our current Sabah Tourism Board and Kota Kinabalu is built on reclaim land in the olden days. It's amazing how K. K. evolved when we think if it.

- Historical Kota Kinabalu Community Centre -

It's history was written on it. Must read it when we have the chance!

- Australian Place -

Where the Australian Liberation Forces used the site for their camp when they landed in 1945.

Walking around Australian which only have two buildings. Now a days, we can see most of it are printing company and backpacker lodge. Thus, we have no idea why there's many printing shop there when we been asked. Maybe... a nice location for them??

When we walked to the other end of those building, we shall see an Army patterned building.

And we shall wait for my next entry about KK Heritage Walk!

Stay tuned!!

 Till then...
