【亚庇玩】 : 来来文化村 之传统Murut族游戏 Fun in Kota Kinabalu - The Langsaran, Cultural Game of Murut Tribe

One of the entertainment for the Murut during the olden days!

I manage to have a try too, but my video that my friend took for me is gone!! And I'm sad about it. =(

About Langsaran - The jump the highest to catch the things hanged on top of the roof!

【亚庇玩】 : 来来文化村 之文化舞蹈 Fun in Kota Kinabalu - Mari-Mari Cultural Village - The Cultural Show

Previous post - The Murut (Headhunters Tribe)

Understand more about the 5 main tribes of Sabah during the visit and we had the chance to see the cultural dance performance. I do enjoyed much and the performers was great with all the effort and energy they put in their dances.

The well know Bamboo Dance. We have the chance to learn their steps too!

After the cultural dance performance, we had a photography session with all the performers. Handsome guys and lovely local girls.

To end our visit before going back to the town, we had our lunch at their restaurant.

The food they serves are mixture of western and local dishes, so that everyone can satisfied their hunger. Besides, remember the Bamboo Cooking that I had posted before? The well done dish were served during our lunch. Didn't have a bite of it, but I think they enjoyed what they cooked!

Tempting right?

【亚庇玩】 : 来来文化村 Fun in Kota Kinabalu : Mari-Mari Cultural Village - The Murut Tribe

Previous post - The Colourful Bajau (click)

Murut tribe is the last tribe that we visit and FYI, I'm mixed blood of these native tribe too!

Besides, Murut tribe is also known as the headhunters of Borneo and the ethic group are concentrated in the district of Tenom and its surrounding area. During the olden days, the more heads they collected, hanging in their house means that the more powerful they are.

The headhunters exist during the earlier generation, and I think there are no longer headhunting now-a-days, however I met a man before who claimed that his ancestor was one of the well known hero in Borneo.

Saw the staircase which one step equal two steps that we usually step? Our tourist guide explained that the real Murut house was not that low, it was quite high (few foots tall) and the usage was to prevent boar and other harmful animals from going in to their house.

The Blow Pipe and also known as "Sumpit" in local language. It was use to hunt animals during the olden days.

The native cigarette.
Tourists can have a try too if they want.

Their entertainment during their free time - The Langsaran.

I enjoyed the game and felt great even I hurt myself on my knee. They even compete between themselves and in need of few persons to make it like a spring during the olden days. It wasn't easy tho, we need to jump as high as we could to reach our goal.

I get my tattoo (the fake one) here too! Our tourist guide explained to us that if we saw tattoos that have plants or bats (not fierce animals) patterns are normally drawn by the Murut people.

Well, CULTURAL DANCES will be the next post!

【亚庇玩】 : 来来文化村 Fun in Kota Kinabalu : Mari-Mari Cultural Village - The Bajau

Previous post - Lundayeh Tribes (click)

The Bajau Tribes is full of colours on their traditional customs, in their wedding and all!! They are also known as the Local Cowboy.

There's a legend that stated that it because the Bajau Tribes is nearer to the sea, therefore, when the big ship embarked at the port, the Bajau people are the first buyer who purchase the beautiful coloured fabric and left most of the black coloured fabric to the other tribes.

Their living place.

We went in to their living room and we saw the Wedding Hall. It's full of colours don't they?

We have the chance to wear their customs and pretended that we are having our wedding there.

Besides, our Mari-Mari guide can play the music instruments laid on the floor wonderfully.

A girl who wear the colouful Bajau traditional custom was making Bajau's snacks for us. Besides, we had the chance to make some too!

Pandan Drink.

The drink is refreshing and not very sweet in flavour.

That's all for our visit to the Bajau Tribes.

The next post will be the Culture of -

MURUT!!

【亚庇玩】 : 来来文化村 Fun in Kota Kinabalu : Mari-Mari Cultural Village - The Lundayeh

Previous post - The Rungus Longhouse.

When we are on our way to visit the Lundayeh Tribes, we have learned the method of Treebark Vest making. They used real tree "skin" to make it and dried for days before they could scratch scratch scratch to make it thinner and it can be as thin as a cotton shirt.

We thought that they will wear the treebark vest all the time, but actually not. They will wear only when they are cold.

Besides, learning Treebark Vest making, they also taught us the method of strings making from treebark. There were guest that ask for some treebark bracelet made by the "locals".

The way they dried the tree "skin" for days before they proceed with treebark vest making.

If I'm not mistaken, every vest are fragile that it could only wear for 3 months and need to make another new one for replacement, and of cause it could be shorter than the duration too!!

I even took some pictures with the treebark vest when they offered us.

Look like a shirt and the texture was like one too!

I don't dare to wear it on me, because I felt itchy when I saw the vest which they pass around. Hygiene! I do not wear it, does not mean that it was scary, some guests worn it too and have fun with all the pictures they took.

They typical Lundayeh's house.

Saw the sculpture of a crocodile? It is not a lizard!!!

During the past, there will be a crocodile sculpture outside their living house, it was use to protect the residents from unforeseeable circumstances and there was a hero in the family (at least one person is a hero).

The Mari-Mari's guide ask us whether we want to enjoy the air-conditioner or not. And he calculated 1, 2 and 3. Walla~~

The cool air was surrounding us (better then none) when they lifted up the roof and we can feel the breeze.

Mari-Mari Cultural Village is great for understanding the culture and the environment really catches my breath. The water fountain, the river etc etc... too much to be mentioned...

That's all for the culture of Lundayeh!!

The next will be the culture of -

BAJAU!!

【亚庇玩】 : 来来文化村 Fun in Kota Kinabalu : Mari-Mari Cultural Village - The Rungus Longhouse

As promised, my Mari-Mari's tour continues with the Rungus Longhouse. (Previously: The Dusun Tribe.)

"Rungus is the fourth biggest tribe in Sabah after Murut, Bajau and Kadazandusun.
The word Rungus comes from Tomborungus. He was the son of Aki Ragang, who lived at the top of the Mount Kinabalu."

Rainy season, therefore the words that made of ropes was ruin when its get wet.

Every culture have their own unique myth here.

Many tourist love to know more about all of our culture, especially Rungus Longhouse. Unfortunately, we have to go to other destination such as Kudat for home-stay, I didn't heard there is any longhouses for homestay currently in K.K.

Why it was called Longhouse? It's because, the whole village was staying together (just like an apartment) under one roof and each room represent one family, the more family stays together, the longer the house will be. Furthermore, there will be a leader to protect the village. And more to explain, if I'm one of them.

The Fire Making Session.
We have the chance to learn the method of fire making in the old times when there was no lighter or matches. One of the tourist tried to make the fire, he rub for minutes and sweating just to make it burnt!

One of the activity that the girls will do during their free time.

We took pictures with the "warriors" and the Rungus girl there. Their beaded costume are beautiful.

The end of Rungus Longhouse and the following is the external view of the Rungus Long House.

(Snap it while we are moving to the other tribe)

The journey continues with the

Tribe of Lundayeh Culture.

【沙巴玩】 : 亚庇 - 来来文化村 Fun in Sabah : Kota Kinabalu - Mari-Mari Cultural Village - The Dusun House

Wake up early on a Saturday morning and get ready for the amazing visiting to Mari-Mari Cultural Village together with tourists who book their tour package from Tropical Holidays Paradise.

I heard good comments from many people who visited that place and I'm fortunate that I have the chance to visit it this time. For your information, Mari-Mari does not entertain walk-in individual customers, therefore the locals and tourists all over the world have to book their tour package from Tour Companies around Kota Kinabalu. The price are fixed and no worries for visitors to book their package with the local Tour Companies.

In the village, there are the Sabahan five (5) largest traditional culture tribes that we can experience their lifestyle in a day. The 5 largest ethic tribes are the Dusun, the Rungus, the Lundayeh, the Bajau and lastly, the Murut.

We gathered together at the assembly area and wait for the tour to start.

The tour will start once we walk through the hanging bridge and entering the world of the traditional Sabah, Borneo.

Put a little imagination, and it's frighten us when the local villagers came forward.
They even act like the real warriors of the past and we enjoyed ourself a lot.

The Dusun House.

The explanation are made by the staff of the Cultural Village and questions can be ask during the tour.

Saw the staircase and the room? It was the traditional way of keeping the unmarried girls a.k.a. Sumandak from men. The staircase will be removed at night, to prevent unforeseeable circumstances. Besides, one house can fits all family members from grandfather, father to children.

The traditional way of cooking. Not a very easy life, they need to protect themselves, by creating many useful tools (one of it was their drinking cups), hunting meat for themselves and many.

When we walk out from the Dusun House, we can learn and taste the Dusun ethic food and drink.

Bamboo Cooking.
It was fun. The ingredients was well prepared, we only have to mix all the ingredients together and pour slowly in to the bamboo tubes, the Dusun girl will burn the bamboo for us and it will be serve during our lunch.

Rice Wine.
Rice wine are served to all. They even taught us the method of rice wine making.

Our Dusun House visiting end at the Rice Wine Stall and next post will be the

RUNGUS LONGHOUSE!!

So, stay tune! ;D
